Why I care – Meet Myra from Omagh

Say hello to Myra

Originally from Craigavon and now living in the Omagh area, she has been making a significant difference in her community for the last three and a half years.

Tell us about your path to care?

“Well, prior to working in care I worked extensively in Horticulture and did other things in the Equestrian field. I ran a livery yard and was also a dressage judge…But it was time for a change, so after many years of caring for nature and animals, I now find myself caring for the community, which I have to say, I really enjoy.”

What challenges do you face whilst working in Care?

“I would be lying if I didn’t say the Winter months can be a struggle, but I take comfort knowing and looking forward to being out and about in the other seasons. People don’t realise how lovely it is to be out and about in the Sperrin Mountains and Countryside…. whilst getting paid to do it. I get to see so much and enjoy the sense of freedom. When I think about it, it’s funny, cause the likes of American tourists pay to see our wonderful countryside, and I get to see it for free whilst doing this job.”

What makes it worthwhile?

“I do love the craic and the wisdom shared by clients whilst out and about. But sometimes I do think it is heart-breaking, that you and the Postman may be the only people to see them most days. But it’s really nice that people look forward to seeing you, when you pull up to a smile and a wave, you know inside that those are the moments that make it all worthwhile.”

Do you think wider society understands the importance of community care?

“I think some people look at care through eyes that are not educated, some think that they are too good to care…. No one is beyond care, no one is beyond making a difference to someone else. I think sometimes people should consider or remember that one day, we all may need looking after…. but thank God for the clients and their families, who are always so supportive and encouraging.”
